Green I

Share

As I stand to pray on my emerald green mat,

The one with golden trim racing the edges –

I am reminded of the green you loved.

The green that fills your closet and adorns

Your body. The same green I feel

When I see you with your other friends.

The green you love so dearly

Like you once loved me. As I enter rukoo,

I am reminded of the us

Praying together. Side by side; we stood

Bearing witness before God, and His Messenger.

We stood on this very green mat. The one

With soft white flowers, black petals.

You were there when I found Islam again.

You took me under your wing to RISE

Events, introduced me to Rabata. You are my sister

In Islam, loved for the sake of Allah,

Mine. This summer you bought me a ring,

You proposed. Girls can be so silly at times. Now I stare

At the ring – wonder if all the memories meant anything

To you. I

Should’ve addressed my concerns with you

Earlier. I didn’t –

That led me

To resent you.

Emerald gem

Surrounded by a thin gold band

Rests at the bottom of my glove compartment.
